“Come on, Hair, why won’t you grow already?!?!” says I, literally every day. Is it possible that my hair grew between 2 and 7 today? Should I do a length check ... again???
So many people desire long hair. As a natural, even though my hair isn’t necessarily short, when those curls shrink up, it has everyone fooled!
When it comes to growing hair, it’s important to realize that healthy hair grows and stays. Your hair health should be your number one concern and length will follow! Here are some of my favorite healthy hair tips that help that hair GROW!
1. Protect Your Hair:
Hair breakage is the harsh end to many growing curls. That’s why it’s so important to prevent breakage by wearing protective styles, which help shield your hair from the elements and keep those fingers from playing (and knotting!) your stands. My sisters and I love to wear our hair in 2-strand twists for a week or do quick and easy buns. Using a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase at night is also a great way to prevent breakage. Long-term protective styles, like box braids or Marley twists, work great as well.
2. You are what you put in:
Your hair (and skin) will reflect the nutrients you are or aren’t giving you body. Drinking 8 cups of water is essential because water is the number UNO when it comes to moisture. It hydrates your hair and scalp, creating healthy strands. The foods you eat are essential too! If you want to learn more, head to A Dictionary of Oils For Your Natural Hair.
3. Hair Porosity:
Knowing your hair porosity is soooooo important because it determines how your hair handles the moisture you put in. If your hair is low porosity, your hair shaft is very compact, making it difficult for moisture to enter. If you have high porosity hair, your hair cuticles are very open, allowing moisture to easily enter and easily escape. To learn what porosity you have and how to ensure your hair stays properly moisturized, check out Understanding Porosity: Step 1 to Healthy Hair.
I personally enjoy using heat from time to time, but, without caution, you can very easily destroy your hair. If you want healthy hair that maintains length, use heat sparingly and make sure your hair is properly moisturized beforehand. There are so many tips on how to properly use heat, and I wish I could smush them into one paragraph, but if you need to learn more, check out our other article Heat and Natural Hair: The 411.
5. Protein Treatments:
Not only is moisturized hair important but so is strong hair. To strengthen your hair and prevent breakage, try protein treatments. Hair contains protein in its very core, and the protein binds the hydrogen molecules in the water that moisturizes. Protein can be lost in the cleansing process, which is why it is essential to replenish the nutrients that are the very backbone of your hair! Besides these basic tips, there are some other unique strategies on how to stimulate hair growth!
1. The Inversion Method:
This strategy is all about stimulating your scalp. You simply apply warm oil to your hair (to find out the best oil for your hair, head to ). Now comes the interesting part! With the oil in your scalp, sit UPSIDE DOWN for about 5 minutes, while rubbing your scalp. You can hang off the end of your bed, do downward dog, or whatever works for you! This causes blood to flow to your scalp, stimulating the nerves to grow hair. Do this for a week every month, and your hair is predicted to grow an inch every month. My sisters and I have tried this off and on, but really want to commit this new year. We’ll tell you how it goes!!
