The lovely Krystle Bell, the Ms. Tri-State Elite 2014, rocking her natural hair!
Normally, when you see a pageant girl, she has that long hair, trailing down her back smooth, silky, and straight. Even though I’m now a pageant girl, that style is definitely not me! So when I signed up for National American Miss, my first thought was “What on earth am I going to do with these curls!” Wearing my hair different from the norm is very important to me. Even though some girls choose to get weave or flat iron their hair, I really wanted something more like my natural hair state. Thankfully, NAM is all about being yourself!
Although there are numerous formal styles out there, not all of them fit the pageant mold. Pageant hair needs to be out of your face, and you might want to change it for the different interview, talent, and formal wear competitions. Surprisingly, the internet had basically NO articles on pageant styles for natural hair (minus pageantplanet, which has everything.) Needless to say, my next idea was to jump onto Pinterest! Since then, I’ve collected so many hairstyles, some that might work and some that are just super cool. I’m sure there are curly-kinky girls out there who are looking for formal natural hairstyles, whether it be for pageants, homecoming, prom, or a wedding. This particular article will have formal hairstyles that line up with pageant-musts, but can be used for any formal occasion! Many of these styles are pretty common, but I found some tutorials that give them a glamorous twist.
Every naturals go-to! However, this look can differ from person to person. Different hair types and lengths can play a big role in how dressy it looks. I’ve seen some twist-outs that I think are lovely, but are a little more outgoing. Wild hairstyles generally don’t go for pageants. So if you want to do a twist-out, but often have a hard time getting definition, length retention, or lasting results, I would suggest mini twist-outs if you can still get enough volume. I love to curl the ends of my twist with teeny-tiny rollers to give them a nice coil when I take them out. Here's a few tutorials.

This is the style I'm getting! It really captures that defined, tiny curls look. It’s like the perfect wash-n-go that lasts for days. I’ve seen and used several straw set tutorials, but this one on twisted, blown-out hair was definitely my favorite for a pageant. It maintains length and shine. Plus, it takes less time than most straw sets!
I don’t know if you’d want to rock this every day of the competition, but buns are very classy and simple (plus it’s easy to imagine them with a crown! Olivia Culpo anyone?) Whether you have locs, long hair, tight curls, or whatever, buns can work for anyone! Don’t be afraid to add some hair pins to dress it up! Definitely try out the bun tutorial below for shorter hair! It's really unique and gives a big hair impression.

This is the next style on my to-do list! So many people have had great results with it! It kind of looks like wand curls, but it’s tighter. They come out shiny , bouncy, and they’re much easier to sleep on than hard rollers. I especially like it on people with medium-length hair because it frames their face like a halo. Absolutely georg!

I especially love this style on short, tapered cuts. They’re so soft, have a great coil, and can definitely pass at a formal event! I love to wear this look, but it often hangs in my face, which can be cute but doesn’t meet the pageant check-list.
